In last week’s post, I asked if you would rather have first dibs on everything or the last laugh. The preferences were closer to an even split on this one, with the last laughers barely edging out the first dibbers. Reasons for choosing one over the other ranged from the blunt and bold “that’s how I roll” and being assertive to the feel-good gift of laughter. As always, a wise collection of comments.
I flip-flopped on this one quite a bit depending on my mood on a particular day. As of the writing of this post, I am swayed by the “first dibs = assertive” line of reasoning and thus choose that option. Besides, I think I could use a little assertiveness boost whenever I can get it.
And now for this week’s question:

Who will it be, fair readers? Is your new BFF The Boy Who Lived who is always fighting off He Who Must Not Be Named, but would do anything for his friends and family? Or is it The Girl on Fire, a skilled archer and hunter who is in a fight to the death but would also do anything to protect those she loves? The kettle’s just boiled and lanterns are lit. Harry wins hands down for me. For one thing, I’d much rather live in his world than that of the Hunger Games. Also, I don’t much like Katniss actually. Call me a rebel. Sure, I admire her, but she’s not the BFF type in my book.

Katniss’ world is a scary place indeed, though Harry’s isn’t all puppies and rainbows. Then again, Harry has magic on his side to literally create puppies and rainbows on a whim. That could come in handy with him as your BFF. 🙂

Harry is totally a nerd. I think he’d find that to be a compliment, especially by the 7th book. Katniss has an edge to her, that’s for sure. But she’s had a hard life, harder than Harry’s in many ways. Harry does have magic on his side, though. A definite plus in a BFF.

I think Harry Potter would drive me a little nuts. A) He’s kind of whiney. B) Always bringing down the magical heat on himself and his friends. I mean HOW MANY YEARS has he been chased by Voldemort and co? HOW MANY? and C) he is totally self-absorbed. I guess having 23 best-selling novels written about you will do that to a person, though.
I think Katniss would totally get your back if she were your bff, so I’ll choose her. Plus, if you had to fend for yourself (with or without being trapped in the Hunger Games Thunderdome) she would be the person to know.

I think you’ll find you’re in good company in your assertion about Harry’s self-absorption. AND they’re hilarious to boot.
Katniss would really have your back, especially if you were about to eat poison berries, which would totally be something I would do being the vegetarian in the group. While she might mock me for that, I’m thinking she’d forage me some kick a$$ plants that didn’t taste like dirt.

Oh, my. I only know the tiniest bit about Harry, having read the first three books to my young ‘uns when the series was new. many eons ago. I know nothing about Katniss, so was knee-jerking toward Harry, but thought I’d at least give Katniss’ bio a read. An archer? Well, novice archer that I am, I could certainly glean some pointers. But, doesn’t this young lass have to kill or be killed? Horrors if I borrowed a scarf and forgot to return it. So, I am back to Harry. It’s not likely we’ll trade clothes, therefore, less worry that he’ll turn his wand on me.

In fact, he’d probably magic you your own and everyone would be happy. Katniss probably doesn’t have a scarf to spare so if you did borrow from her closet, she’d know EXACTLY what was missing and track you down for it. Yeah, Harry might be the less intense, less scary BFF in this scenario.

I read the jacket of The Hunger Games and thought, “My, that’s one of the most unappealing story premises I’ve ever seen.” My kids read it – more or less on the sly – and have seen the movie. I have not. That said, in her post-Oscar interview, Jennifer Lawrence comes across as the most amazingly funny, down-to-earth woman. Totally best friend material. So I’m going to buck the trend and go for Katniss, in the hopes she brings Jennifer along when we hang out.

I think Jennifer Lawrence is awesome and her interview is great. I think there’s a lot of her personality in Katniss, though Katniss has had a tough life living in District 13, the poorest of the districts. The books are actually good reads. I was initially put off by the premise as well, but I’m so glad I read the series. They’re so much more than what you read on the jacket cover.

Like many of you, I prefer Harry’s magical world to the world Katniss has to live in. But I’ll choose Jennifer Lawrence because I just loved her Oscar interview and what she did in Silver Linings Playbook.

Katniss without a doubt. I love me some Harry Potter, but Katniss is a badass and she could teach me the survival skills i will need in the event of the zombie apocalypse. Additionally, she is tough and sweet. Harry would need me too much; Katniss would need me just the right amount. But, if we are talking about having particular powers….I would want Harry’s powers.

I’d have to go with Harry, mainly because I’ve read 5 of the books and seen a couple of the movies. I’ve never read The Hunger Games, nor seen the movie, so Katniss is an unknown quantity that I’m not sure I’d want to gamble on.
