Taking Tea in the Kasbah

This weekend’s road trip is really more of a plane trip because we’re going international! So dust off your passport (you do have one, right?), pack your carry-on suitcase lightly (because I don’t want to have to deal with any more Baggage Services Ladies – see this post here for more on that), and let’s head out:

Shamefully, I had not been aware of the atrocities going on in Uganda and was deeply moved by the video shown in Emmie Mears’ post about the abhorrent Joseph Kony who has been abducting children for decades and forcing the boys into being in his murderous army and the girls into being sex slaves. While there is controversy surrounding how the funds are used by the activist group, Invisible Children, their overall goal in stopping Joseph Kony is one that we can all get behind. Please, please, please, if you do nothing else this weekend, watch the video posted on Emmie’s blog, then forward it to everyone you know. Get the word out. Make sure the U.S. government hears our collective voices. Be a part of making sure Joseph Kony is arrested and the inhuman treatment of these children in Uganda stops.

Next, we’ll head over to Guatemala to join the ThirdEye Mom as she celebrates International Women’s Day and learns about women’s lives in the town of Xela. I’m always impressed at how she immerses herself in the culture and really captures what she sees going on around her in her photos.

And speaking of International Women’s Day, let’s make a stop at the Uncornered Market blog. The husband and wife “digital storytellers” have an amazing collection of photos of women from around the world.

Next, let’s jet over to Camels and Chocolate, the blog of travel writer Kristin Luna. I’ll admit to being a sucker for amazing travel photos and this blog doesn’t disappoint. She has tons of drool-worthy photos, especially those on her About page. I have to pace myself when reading her blog – mostly because my always-simmering-just-below-the-surface case of wanderlust gets triggered and I start plotting and scheming my next adventure even though I don’t have the funds to support that right now. But there’s no harm in dreaming, right?

What are you dreaming and scheming about today, my intrepid travelers/readers? Got any international plans cooking up? Any U.S. road trips planned? How did you celebrate International Women’s Day? Do tell, do tell!

  1. Hi, Tami. I like this presentation of what look some some interesting blog links. Definitely some stuff to check out over the weekend.

Today I think I’m only scheming to get some work done on my novel. It hasn’t seen much attention this week because I started my blog and finally got on Facebook and stuff. But it’s been a good week 🙂

    • I’m excited for you that your blog is up! That’s a big undertaking in itself, not mention the other social media stuff. I know what you mean about not giving the WIP much attention lately. Mine has been a little neglected, too. In between scheming about international travel, I’ll give it the attention it’s needing. Good luck in getting some writing done today!

      • Thanks! I’m glad to finally have my blog up. I’d been putting it off for months because I wasn’t sure what I’d blog about. I’m still not entirely sure, but I have more of an idea now 🙂

Scheming about international travel, huh? To any place in particular?

        • Oh, I always have lots of places in mind. But right now Prague is intriguing me. And I’d like to go back to London since the first and only time I was there was far too brief. I also have grand dreams of going to Tanzania, Thailand, Australia, and India. My dreams tend to be bigger than my budget right now. 🙂

          • I know the feeling 🙂

Those all sound like great places to visit. I’ve only been to Norway and I get there as often as I can, but one day I should probably try another place.

  2. I would love to go to Italy and Austria … but I’d settle for Prague and Africa any day. Thanks for the slice of adventure!

    • I went to Italy this past summer and loooooved it. Especially Venice and Siena. Austria is on my list, too.

  3. I LOVE Austria! Entering the conversation as if Elizabeth is sitting in my virtual circle around the campfire.

But, with those photo, I think my next dream vacation has to be Prague. Who knew?

Thanks for the incredible links, Tami.

    • Glad you’ve joined the chat around the campfire, Gloria! Sounds like you’ve been to Austria? Would love to go someday.

  4. Thanks for taking us on this little international trip. Just back from a road trip to Nashville and needing to work on my French for my trip to France this summer. Where would I like to go? My daughter told me Estonia is beautiful.

    • I’ve heard Estonia is beautiful as well. So many places to see! I’m envious that you can speak French. Four years of h.s. Spanish and two years of German in college has taken up all of the space in my brain for languages.

  5. Hmm…didn’t really have any ideas in mind until I saw the picture of Prague you posted. Now that’s where I want to go. And then I want to go to Melbourne to have some Vanilla Slice. More realistically, maybe LA for spring break so I can work in a little novel research with my mouse ears.

    • I’ll join you in Melbourne for some Vanilla Slice – it sounds divine. And if you’re needing a research assistant in LA, I’m happy to oblige. 🙂
